NEWPORT JAZZ FESTIVAL (1954 to 1971):

Attended the first NPJF (July 1954) and volunteered to conductor George Wein. Representatives from the US Congress, Mr. Wein, and Reverend John Gensel (St. Peter’s Lutheran Church) asked Mr. Hopewell to offer a lecture to the first cadre of the Peace Corps volunteers founded by President John F. Kennedy to inspire the volunteers and educate them in order to spread jazz to Africa, Asia, and other countries throughout the world.
