Maxine Gordon, widow of Dexter Gordon, her son, Woody Shaw III, and Mr. Hopewell formed The Dexter Gordon Society. Mr. Hopewell’s long established record of assisting many NYC organizations to receive tax benefits for their endeavors also established the 501(c)(3) for TDGS ensuring the preservation of Dexter’s legacy. Mr. Hopewell served as CFO for the TDGS and financial advisor to Mrs. Gordon. Mr. Hopewell’s dedication and commitment to long hours of work over several years, unwavering support for Maxine and Woody personally, and advisor to Maxine helped them realize a long held dream and vision for the TDGS. It was well established in social and jazz circles that Maxine and Woody benefitted tremendously, personally and professionally, from Mr. Hopewell’s tireless efforts. Mr. Hopewell was considered a devotee to the music and the musicians as well asa generous, positive, kind, and loving friend.
